The author was born in Poland in the year 1899. He lived in Warsaw and was mobilized as a manufacturer of war-material in 1934. In 1940, the family had to move into the Ghetto. He did not think much of the Jewish Council there (p.2). High death-rate as the result of starvation, epidemics, atrocities (p.2); during the first year 800 casualties daily. Deportations in July 1942 to Treblinka (p.3-4). Hans Frank, Governor of Poland (p.3-4). Nechemia Finkelstein, publisher of the Jewish Newspaper and President of the Jewish Medical Institute (TOZ), where the author and his wife could hide, until there was room enough at the Ghetto in consequence of the many casualties and mass-deportations. The author's relatives were all dead, by this time. The hospital was empty: the Jewish doctors had mercifully given injections to all patients, on the day before their impending deportation to the gas chambers (p.4). Forced Labour with the Germans and Ukrainians (p.4-5).
Non-Jews helping Jews: with the help of a former maid (p.1-2, 4), the author's wife could escape from the Ghetto; mass-murder (p.5). They owed much to Mr Silveskoeld of SKF, Sweden, as well and his secretary Fräulein Jager who lived in Warsaw during the War (p.6, 11). Escape and illegal life (p.5-6). Denounced and blackmailed by a German and Pole, in the end warned by the German Gestapo-man to take to flight as quickly as possible (p.7). Poles looking at the spectacle of the burning Ghetto showed no sign of pity with the Jews (p.7). Hiding in a cave, after some weeks of refuge at a convent (p.8). In November 1944, arrested by German troops together with 200 Poles; a humane German officer released the author and his wife (p.9). Poles helping to save a Jew's life (p.9-10). On 7 January 1945 via Warsaw, now completely destroyed and occupied by the Russians, to Prague (p.10).
