- Title:
- Eyewitness account by Sofi Billig of the atrocities committed by camp commandant Seck in Jungfernhof concentration camp
- Summary:
-
Original title: HORROR CAMP-COMMANDANT SECK
Recorded by: author
Original form and contents: Witnessed Statement. Author was in charge of the sewing-room at Jungfernhof Camp and in daily contact with the CAMP COMMANDANT, SECK. Jungfernhof Camp, which could be called a horror camp, at the beginning of the author's imprisonment there - from 10.12.1941 - had no sufficient water supply, so that the inmates drank from the river Duena and many contracted PARATYPHOID. There were no arrangements for latrines. The usual STARVATION DIET. Continually INMATES were SHOT either by ORDER of SECK or by him PERSONALLY. He treated his victims with the utmost BRUTALITY and CYNICALLY ENJOYED ILL-TREATING and KILLING them. INMATES had - under threats of being beaten up - to LOOK ON AT EXECUTION, even the wife of the man who was hanged. (ATROCITIES) On a January day in 1942 - during a violent snow-storm - author watched the SICK BARRACK being EVACUATED; on SECK'S ORDERS the Latvian guards grabbed the SICK PERSONS by their LEGS and THREW them NAKED on to a ‘bus. She was later told that the people were gassed in the ‘bus and interred in the woods. Heaps of corpses at Jungfernhof were buried only when a commission was expected; the soil was frozen hard and had to be blasted open. Author mentions “ACTION DUENAMUENDE” on 26.3.1942 and estimates the number of victims killed at abt.l400.
