Description
- Title:
- Eyewitness account by Ota Kraus entitled 'Testimony in the Criminal Proceedings against the late Prof. Carl Clauberg'
- Summary:
-
The witness was a prisoner in Auschwitz from 1942 to 1944. He worked there as a locksmith and this gave him access to the women’s section. In November 1942 a nurse in the sick bay told him of experiments on human beings carried out in an adjoining room by Dr. Schuma. Through a keyhole the witness saw men being sterilzed with x-rays. When he contracted typhoid and was transferred to the sick bay in Block 7, he met some of the men who had been treated with x-rays or who had been castrated, and he witnessed their decline and ultimate despatch to the gas chambers. He himself escaped by hiding whenever the SS doctors came to select new victims.
Later on he heard about experiments on women carried out by Dr. Clauberg. His chief informant was Magda Blava, formerly commandant of Block 10, who had been sent back to Birkenau. Further details were provided by the women who worked in the office and who were in constant fear of being sent to Block 10 because they were in a comparatively good state of health. One of them was Katerina Valenska, the chief clerk of the Camp and consequently well acquainted with conditions in that block and the subsequent selections for the gas chambers. The witness also met Dr. Dora Klein, Dr. Vilem Jurkovic and the assistant M. Schwalb, all of whom confirmed that Dr. Clauberg was responsible for the experiments. Finally, he frequently saw women in Block 25, the reception centre for the weak and unfit prisoners, many of whom had returned in a deplorable condition from Block 10 and were sent straight away to the gas chambers after their numbers had been registered. Generally, they were taken to the crematorium by night, but witness saw lorries with women in their shirts being driven in the daytime towards the crematorium. In his estimate the women murdered as a result of Dr. Clauberg’s experiments numbered several hundred.
The witness is the author of the book Tovarna na smrt ("Death Factory”), and in compiling his data on Auschwitz he was assisted by the International Committee of the Prisoners of Auschwitz.
