Description
- Title:
- Eyewitness account by Arthur Lehmann of conditions at labour camp Mühlberg and the death march to Bergen-Belsen
- Summary:
-
A report written in the first person; a weekly ration sheet for prisoners is appended. The labour camp Mühlberg belonged to the Neuengamme chain of camps. Work was carried out for the Hannoversche Maschinenbau A.G. (“Hanomag”). The author arrived at Mühlberg from Laurahütte (see related report P.III.h. No. 415) under the same SS commander, Quakernack. Working conditions, including the premium system, were similar to those at Laurahütte. The attitude of the German foremen and other workers, as also that of the German civilian population, was hostile. The camp was evacuated on 5 April 1945. The prisoners were marched into the countryside for 3 days, during which Rottenführer Rex and Kommandoführer Quakernack committed numerous murders. On 8 April 1945, the author and his fellow prisoners arrived at Bergen-Belsen.
